Ingvar Kamprad, Despite £51bn fortune, wears second hand clothes, drives 15-year-old Volvo To show example

The founder of Ikea, Ingvar Kamprad, died on Saturday aged 91 at his home in Smaland, Sweden, the company has confirmed. Mr. Kamprad, described as “one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 20th century,” was 17 when he founded Ikea — a shop for furniture, lighting, home accessories and more — in 1943, but the notoriously frugal billionaire has made headlines over the years for his modest spending habits. The man, who was once listed as the world’s fourth richest man, took easy Jet flights, drove himself around in a 15-year-old Volvo and furnished his modest house almost entirely with Ikea items — which he assembled himself.
And the Ikea magnate once took a bus to a gala evening to collect a businessman of the year award, prompting security to refuse to let him in. Kamprad admitted buying all his clothes from flea (second hand) markets in the hope of setting a good example to others. During visits to London, he shunned taxis and preferred to use the Tube or buses. He and his wife, Margaretha, loved to dine out in cheap restaurants and they haggled over prices in their local market. As for haircut, he usually waited till he was in a developed country where he could get it cheaply done. Said he, “’Normally, I try to get my haircut when I’m in a developing country. Last time it was in Vietnam.” When a statue of him was erected in his Swedish home town, he was invited to cut the ribbon. He instead untied it, folded it, then gave it back to the mayor, telling him he could use it again. Explaining his frugal nature, he said: ‘I am a bit tight with money, a sort of Swedish Scotsman. But so what? “If I start to acquire luxurious things then this will only incite others to follow suit. It’s important that leaders set an example “I look at the money I’m about to spend on myself and ask if Ikea’s customers could afford it.” Kamprad was a former Nazi sympathiser in the years immediately following the Second World War and faced questions about his past in 2011 after author Elisabeth Asbrink said he had been an active recruiter for a Swedish Nazi group. The Swedish billionaire claimed his involvement was ‘stupidity’ and the ‘greatest mistake’ of his life. A self-confessed alcoholic, the Ikea founder admitted he had an ongoing problem with drink. But he said he had it under control and that he ‘dries out’ three times a year. Multinational Ikea, with hundreds of stores, has long been the world’s largest furniture retailer. The company is run jointly by Mr Kamprad’s three sons — Peter, 44, Jonas, 41, and Matthias, 39.

TRUMP SAID: IF YOU COULD DREAM IT YOU COULD GET A US CITIZENSHIP IN 10-12 YEARS

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday he was prepared to back a deal that would provide a pathway to citizenship to America’s so-called “Dreamer” immigrants over a period of 10 to 12 years. The latest approach by the White House suggests a key development in negotiations over some 700,000 immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children, and face deportation as early as March. “We are going to morph into it,” Trump told reporters about the citizenship provision. “It’s going to happen, at some point in the future, over a period of 10 to 12 years.” US lawmakers have struggled for months to negotiate a compromise over the status of the Dreamers. An impasse over the issue, a source of bitter partisan tension in Washington, recently shut down the government for three days. In reaching a deal to resume federal operations, the Senate’s Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Congress would aim to negotiate an immigration agreement by February 8, and if a deal is not struck by then, the issue would be taken up in debate on the Senate floor. Although Trump did not provide details on the pathway to citizenship, his comments are perhaps the most telling sign that a broader deal might be within reach. They came just hours after the White House announced it will release a “legislative framework” for immigration reform on Monday that is acceptable to both Democrats and Republicans. “After decades of inaction by Congress, it’s time we work together to solve this issue once and for all,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told journalists. “The White House will release a legislative framework on Monday that represents a compromise that members of both parties can support,” which is based on “dozens” of meetings with Republican and Democratic leadership and legislators, she said. The plan would fulfill “four agreed-upon pillars” of immigration reform, she added: border security, curbing extended family reunification known as “chain migration,” cancelling the green-card visa lottery, and providing a permanent solution on DACA. – ‘Strong statement’ – The first three pillars are largely Republican priorities, while the last — fixing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — is a cause championed by the Democrats. DACA, which was instituted by Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama in 2012, protects from deportation hundreds of thousands of immigrants who arrived in the country illegally as children. Trump said in September he was scrapping DACA, throwing the future of those it covers into doubt, but delayed enforcement to give Congress until March to craft a lasting solution. Democrats unsuccessfully sought to tie a solution to the DACA issue to a stop-gap measure to fund the federal government, but Republicans rejected the effort, leading to a shutdown from Saturday to Monday. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican pointman on the immigration negotiations, hailed Trump’s comments as a major breakthrough. “With this strong statement by President Trump, I have never felt better about our chances of finding a solution on immigration,” Graham said in a statement. Trump’s “support for a pathway to citizenship will help us get strong border security measures as we work to modernize a broken immigration system.” Trump’s remarks signified key movement in a debate that appeared to stall Tuesday after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer withdrew an offer to fund a wall that Trump wants constructed on the US border with Mexico. Schumer had reportedly offered as much as $25 billion for the wall, which was among the most prominent planks of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, as part of an immigration deal. When Trump rejected that deal, Schumer pulled the offer. “Cryin’ Chuck Schumer fully understands, especially after his humiliating defeat, that if there is no Wall, there is no DACA,” Trump tweeted late Tuesday. “We must have safety and security, together with a strong Military, for our great people!”

Read: How Google Honoured Stephen “Big Boss” Keshi

Keshi: Why Google honoured him on 24th January 2018. Nigerian football icon Stephen “Big Boss” Keshi was on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 honoured by Google on what would have been his 56th birthday. The search engine changed its logo in Nigeria Tuesday to an illustration of the legendary sports star. Keshi was one of only two men to win the Africa Cup of Nations as both a player and coach. But the later part of his career was described as turbulent by some after quitting over unpaid wages and later being sacked. This is his story: Big boss Born in Azare, Nigeria in 1962, Keshi started his football career as a defender, and was among the first Nigerians to play professional football abroad. He developed his career and passion in mainly Belgian clubs. He was later educated in the US as a coach. He was known as the “Big Boss” because of his leadership drive. He played for the Nigerian National team at the FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations, where he took home the title in 1994. In 2006, Keshi, as manager, led Togo to qualify for its first FIFA World Cup. But he left the team before the tournament and was replaced by Otto Pfister. He began coaching the national team of his native Nigeria and led the team to victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, becoming one of only two people to win the tournament as both a player and a coach.

Shocking: How a woman who vanished from a town in southern Mexico was discovered inside pots atop a stove in her ex-husband’s home

In what will come across as a really shocking development, a woman has been found dismembered and boiled on a stove. The dismembered remains of a woman who vanished from a town in southern Mexico were discovered inside pots atop a stove in her ex-husband’s home. Magdalena Aguilar Romero, 25, was last seen leaving her home in the city of Taxco the morning of Jan. 13, after saying she was going to pick up her children from her ex-husband’s home, police said. State security spokesman Roberto Alvarez said the woman’s remains were found Monday in the home of her ex-husband, who local media identified as Cesar Gomez Arciniega. “It is presumed that she was cooked,” he said. Police said Romero’s legs and arms were found inside a pot on the stove, while her already cooked pelvis was found in a bag near the stove, El Milenio reported. In a nearby refrigerator, the rest of the body was found. Police said they are investigating Arciniega for “femicide,” or the killing of a woman when the motive is directly related to the victim’s gender. It is unclear if he has been arrested. In a statement, the government of Taxco said it “vigorously condemns the cowardly murder of Magdalena Aguilar, which irreparably hurts our society.” “[It] reiterates the work that needs to be done to protect and rebuild the social fabric of our municipality,” the statement continued. “From the time her disappearance was known, we have offered all the support to Magdalena’s family, with who we have always shown solidarity and to whom we show our unconditional support.” It added: “We demand that those responsible be punished to the full weight of the law and that this act does not go unpunished." According to a report released last month by the Mexican government and the UN Women agency, murders of women in the country have risen sharply over the last decade following two decades of decline. Sky News reported that, of the 52,210 killings of women reported in Mexico since 1985, nearly a third have taken place since 2011. Guerrero was named to have the second highest “femicide” rate in 2016. *** Source: Fox News

Obasanjo mock Buhari 2019 Ambition in New Letter Says: Nigerians are hungry, don't run

It is callous and insensitive for governors to endorse the President for second term A former President, Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday, in a statement has called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election itin 2019. In the letter, Obasanjo states that President Buhari has performed far below expectations and his election was due to the fact that Nigerians wanted former President Goodluck Jonathan out. Obasanjo also said he felt disappointed that Buhari, whom he supported against Jonathan in 2015. Read the letter below: THE WAY OUT: A CLARION CALL FOR COALITION FOR NIGERIA MOVEMENT Since we are still in the month of January, it is appropriate to wish all Nigerians Happy 2018. I am constrained to issue this special statement at this time considering the situation of the country. Some of you may be asking, “What has brought about this special occasion of Obasanjo issuing a Special Statement?” You will be right to ask such a question. But there is a Yoruba saying that ‘when lice abound in your clothes, your fingernails will never be dried of blood’. When I was in the village, to make sure that lice die, you put them between two fingernails and press hard to ensure they die and they always leave blood stains on the fingernails. To ensure you do not have blood on your fingernails, you have to ensure that lice are not harboured anywhere within your vicinity. The lice of poor performance in government – poverty, insecurity, poor economic management, nepotism, gross dereliction of duty, condonation of misdeed – if not outright encouragement of it, lack of progress and hope for the future, lack of national cohesion and poor management of internal political dynamics and widening inequality – are very much with us today. With such lice of general and specific poor performance and crying poverty with us, our fingers will not be dry of ‘blood’. Four years ago when my PDP card was torn, I made it abundantly clear that I quit partisan politics for aye but my concern and interest in Nigeria, Africa and indeed in humanity would not wane. Ever since, I have adhered strictly to that position. Since that time, I have devoted quality time to the issue of zero hunger as contained in Goal No. 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN. We have set the target that Nigeria with the participating States in the Zero Hunger Forum should reach Zero Hunger goal by 2025 – five years earlier than the UN target date. I am involved in the issue of education in some States and generally in the issue of youth empowerment and employment. I am involved in all these domestically and altruistically to give hope and future to the seemingly hopeless and those in despair. I believe strongly that God has endowed Nigeria so adequately that no Nigerian should be either in want or in despair. I believe in team work and collaborative efforts. At the international level, we have worked with other world leaders to domicile the apparatus for monitoring and encouraging socio-economic progress in Africa in our Presidential Library. The purpose of Africa Progress Group, which is the new name assumed by Africa Progress Panel (APP), is to point out where, when and what works need to be done for the progress of Africa separately and collectively by African leaders and their development partners. I have also gladly accepted the invitation of the UN Secretary-General to be a member of his eighteen-member High-Level Board of Advisers on Mediation. There are other assignments I take up in other fora for Africa and for the international community. For Africa to move forward, Nigeria must be one of the anchor countries, if not the leading anchor country. It means that Nigeria must be good at home to be good outside. No doubt, our situation in the last decade or so had shown that we are not good enough at home; hence we are invariably absent at the table that we should be abroad. All these led me to take the unusual step of going against my own political Party, PDP, in the last general election to support the opposite side. I saw that action as the best option for Nigeria. As it has been revealed in the last three years or so, that decision and the subsequent collective decision of Nigerians to vote for a change was the right decision for the nation. For me, there was nothing personal, it was all in the best interest of Nigeria and, indeed, in the best interest of Africa and humanity at large. Even the horse rider then, with whom I maintain very cordial, happy and social relationship today has come to realise his mistakes and regretted it publicly and I admire his courage and forthrightness in this regard. He has a role to play on the side line for the good of Nigeria, Africa and humanity and I will see him as a partner in playing such a role nationally and internationally, but not as a horse rider in Nigeria again. The situation that made Nigerians to vote massively to get my brother Jonathan off the horse is playing itself out again. First, I thought I knew the point where President Buhari is weak and I spoke and wrote about it even before Nigerians voted for him and I also did vote for him because at that time it was a matter of “any option but Jonathan” (aobj). But my letter to President Jonathan titled: “Before It Is Too Late” was meant for him to act before it was too late. He ignored it and it was too late for him and those who goaded him into ignoring the voice of caution. I know that praise-singers and hired attackers may be raised up against me for verbal or even physical attack but if I can withstand undeserved imprisonment and was ready to shed my blood by standing for Nigeria, I will consider no sacrifice too great to make for the good of Nigeria at any time. No human leader is expected to be personally strong or self-sufficient in all aspects of governance. I knew President Buhari before he became President and said that he is weak in the knowledge and understanding of the economy but I thought that he could make use of good Nigerians in that area that could help. Although, I know that you cannot give what you don’t have and that economy does not obey military order. You have to give it what it takes in the short-, medium- and long-term. Then, it would move. I know his weakness in understanding and playing in the foreign affairs sector and again, there are many Nigerians that could be used in that area as well. They have knowledge and experience that could be deployed for the good of Nigeria. There were serious allegations of round-tripping against some inner caucus of the Presidency which would seem to have been condoned. I wonder if such actions do not amount to corruption and financial crime, then what is it? Culture of condonation and turning blind eye will cover up rather than clean up. And going to justice must be with clean hands. I thought President Buhari would fight corruption and insurgency and he must be given some credit for his achievement so far in these two areas although it is not yet uhuru! The herdsmen/crop farmers issue is being wittingly or unwittingly allowed to turn sour and messy. It is no credit to the Federal Government that the herdsmen rampage continues with careless abandon and without finding an effective solution to it. And it is a sad symptom of insensitivity and callousness that some Governors, a day after 73 victims were being buried in a mass grave in Benue State without condolence, were jubilantly endorsing President Buhari for a second term! The timing was most unfortunate. The issue of herdsmen/crop farmers dichotomy should not be left on the political platform of blame game; the Federal Government must take the lead in bringing about solution that protects life and properties of herdsmen and crop farmers alike and for them to live amicably in the same community. But there are three other areas where President Buhari has come out more glaringly than most of us thought we knew about him. One is nepotic deployment bordering on clannishness and inability to bring discipline to bear on errant members of his nepotic court. This has grave consequences on performance of his government to the detriment of the nation. It would appear that national interest was being sacrificed on the altar of nepotic interest. What does one make of a case like that of Maina: collusion, condonation, ineptitude, incompetence, dereliction of responsibility or kinship and friendship on the part of those who should have taken visible and deterrent disciplinary action? How many similar cases are buried, ignored or covered up and not yet in the glare of the media and the public? The second is his poor understanding of the dynamics of internal politics. This has led to wittingly or unwittingly making the nation more divided and inequality has widened and become more pronounced. It also has effect on general national security. The third is passing the buck. For instance, blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for devaluation of the naira by 70% or so and blaming past governments for it, is to say the least, not accepting one’s own responsibility. Let nobody deceive us, economy feeds on politics and because our politics is depressing, our economy is even more depressing today. If things were good, President Buhari would not need to come in. He was voted to fix things that were bad and not engage in the blame game. Our Constitution is very clear, one of the cardinal responsibilities of the President is the management of the economy of which the value of the naira forms an integral part. Kinship and friendship that place responsibility for governance in the hands of the unelected can only be deleterious to good government and to the nation. President Buhari’s illness called for the sympathy, understanding, prayer and patience from every sane Nigerian. It is part of our culture. Most Nigerians prayed for him while he was away sick in London for over hundred days and he gave his Deputy sufficient leeway to carry on in his absence. We all thanked God for President Buhari for coming back reasonably hale and hearty and progressing well in his recovery. But whatever may be the state of President Buhari’s health today, he should neither over-push his luck nor over-tax the patience and tolerance of Nigerians for him, no matter what his self-serving, so-called advisers, who would claim that they love him more than God loves him and that without him, there would be no Nigeria say. President Buhari needs a dignified and honourable dismount from the horse. He needs to have time to reflect, refurbish physically and recoup and after appropriate rest, once again, join the stock of Nigerian leaders whose experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country. His place in history is already assured. Without impaired health and strain of age, running the affairs of Nigeria is a 25/7 affair, not 24/7. I only appeal to brother Buhari to consider a deserved rest at this point in time and at this age. I continue to wish him robust health to enjoy his retirement from active public service. President Buhari does not necessarily need to heed my advice. But whether or not he heeds it, Nigeria needs to move on and move forward. I have had occasion in the past to say that the two main political parties – APC and PDP – were wobbling. I must reiterate that nothing has happened to convince me otherwise. If anything, I am reinforced in my conviction. The recent show of PDP must give grave and great concern to lovers of Nigeria. To claim, as has been credited to the chief kingmaker of PDP, that for procuring the Supreme Court judgement for his faction of the Party, he must dictate the tune all the way and this is indeed fraught with danger. If neither APC nor PDP is a worthy horse to ride to lead Nigeria at this crucial and critical time, what then do we do? Remember Farooq Kperogi, an Associate Professor at the Kennesaw State University, Georgia, United States, calls it “a cruel Hobson’s choice; it’s like a choice between six and half a dozen, between evil and evil. Any selection or deflection would be a distinction without a difference.” We cannot just sit down lamenting and wringing our hands desperately and hopelessly. I believe the situation we are in today is akin to what and where we were in at the beginning of this democratic dispensation in 1999. The nation was tottering. People became hopeless and saw no bright future in the horizon. It was all a dark cloud politically, economically and socially. The price of oil at that time was nine dollars per barrel and we had a debt overhang of about $35 billion. Most people were confused with lack of direction in the country. One of the factors that saved the situation was a near government of national unity that was put in place to navigate us through the dark cloud. We had almost all hands on deck. We used people at home and from the diaspora and we navigated through the dark cloud of those days. At that time, most people were hopelessly groping in the dark. They saw no choice, neither in the left nor in the right, and yet we were not bereft of people at home and from the diaspora that could come together to make Nigeria truly a land flowing with milk and honey. Where we are is a matter of choice but we can choose differently to make a necessary and desirable change, once again. Wherever I go, I hear Nigerians complaining, murmuring in anguish and anger. But our anger should not be like the anger of the cripple. We can collectively save ourselves from the position we find ourselves. It will not come through self-pity, fruitless complaint or protest but through constructive and positive engagement and collective action for the good of our nation and ourselves and our children and their children. We need moral re-armament and engaging togetherness of people of like-mind and goodwill to come solidly together to lift Nigeria up. This is no time for trading blames or embarking on futile argument and neither should we accept untenable excuses for non-performance. Let us accept that the present administration has done what it can do to the limit of its ability, aptitude and understanding. Let the administration and its political party platform agree with the rest of us that what they have done and what they are capable of doing is not good enough for us. They have given as best as they have and as best as they can give. Nigeria deserves and urgently needs better than what they have given or what we know they are capable of giving. To ask them to give more will be unrealistic and will only sentence Nigeria to a prison term of four years if not destroy it beyond the possibility of an early recovery and substantial growth. Einstein made it clear to us that doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the height of folly. Already, Nigerians are committing suicide for the unbearable socio-economic situation they find themselves in. And yet Nigerians love life. We must not continue to reinforce failure and hope that all will be well. It is self-deceit and self-defeat and another aspect of folly. What has emerged from the opposition has shown no better promise from their antecedents. As the leader of that Party for eight years as President of Nigeria, I can categorically say there is nothing to write home about in their new team. We have only one choice left to take us out of Egypt to the promised land. And that is the coalition of the concerned and the willing – ready for positive and drastic change, progress and involvement. Change that will give hope and future to all our youth and dignity and full participation to all our women. Our youth should be empowered to deploy their ability to learn, innovate and work energetically at ideas and concepts in which they can make their own original inputs. Youth must be part of the action today and not relegated to leadership of tomorrow which may never come. Change that will mean enhancement of living standard and progress for all. A situation where the elected will accountably govern and every Nigerian will have equal opportunity not based on kinship and friendship but based on free citizenship. Democracy is sustained and measured not by leaders doing extra-ordinary things, (invariably, leaders fail to do ordinary things very well), but by citizens rising up to do ordinary things extra-ordinarily well. Our democracy, development and progress at this juncture require ordinary citizens of Nigeria to do the extra-ordinary things of changing the course and direction of our lackluster performance and development. If leadership fails, citizens must not fail and there lies the beauty and importance of democracy. We are challenged by the current situation; we must neither adopt spirit of cowardice nor timidity let alone impotence but must be sustained by courage, determination and commitment to say and do and to persist until we achieve upliftment for Nigeria. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and we believe that our venturing will not be in vain. God of Nigeria has endowed this country adequately and our non-performance cannot be blamed on God but on leadership. God, who has given us what we need and which is potentially there, will give us leadership enablement to actualize our potentiality. The development and modernization of our country and society must be anchored and sustained on dynamic Nigerian culture, enduring values and an enchanting Nigerian dream. We must have abiding faith in our country and its role and place within the comity of nations. Today, Nigeria needs all hands on deck. All hands of men and women of goodwill must be on deck. We need all hands to move our country forward. We need a Coalition for Nigeria, CN. Such a Movement at this juncture needs not be a political party but one to which all well-meaning Nigerians can belong. That Movement must be a coalition for democracy, good governance, social and economic well-being and progress. Coalition to salvage and redeem our country. You can count me with such a Movement. Last time, we asked, prayed and worked for change and God granted our request. This time, we must ask, pray and work for change with unity, security and progress. And God will again grant us. Of course, nothing should stop such a Movement from satisfying conditions for fielding candidates for elections. But if at any stage the Movement wishes to metamorphose into candidate-sponsoring Movement for elections, I will bow out of the Movement because I will continue to maintain my non-partisan position. Coalition for Nigeria must have its headquarters in Abuja. This Coalition for Nigeria will be a Movement that will drive Nigeria up and forward. It must have a pride of place for all Nigerians, particularly for our youth and our women. It is a coalition of hope for all Nigerians for speedy, quality and equal development, security, unity, prosperity and progress. It is a coalition to banish poverty, insecurity and despair. Our country must not be oblivious to concomitant danger around, outside and ahead. Coalition for Nigeria must be a Movement to break new ground in building a united country, a socially-cohesive and moderately prosperous society with equity, equality of opportunity, justice and a dynamic and progressive economy that is self-reliant and takes active part in global division of labour and international decision-making. The Movement must work out the path of development and the trajectory of development in speed, quality and equality in the short- medium- and long-term for Nigeria on the basis of sustainability, stability, predictability, credibility, security, cooperation and prosperity with diminishing inequality. What is called for is love, commitment and interest in our country, not in self, friends and kinship alone but particularly love, compassion and interest in the poor, underprivileged and downtrodden. It is our human duty and responsibility so to do. Failure to do this will amount to a sin against God and a crime against humanity. Some may ask, what does Obasanjo want again? Obasanjo has wanted nothing other than the best for Nigeria and Nigerians and he will continue to want nothing less. And if we have the best, we will be contented whether where we live is described as palaces or huts by others and we will always give thanks to God. I, therefore, will gladly join such a Movement when one is established as Coalition for Nigeria, CN, taking Nigeria to the height God has created it to be. From now on, the Nigeria eagle must continue to soar and fly high. CN, as a Movement, will be new, green, transparent and must remain clean and always active, selflessly so. Members must be ready to make sacrifice for the nation and pay the price of being pioneers and good Nigerians for our country to play the God-assigned role for itself, for its neighbours, for its sub-region of West Africa, for its continent and for humanity in general. For me, the strength and sustainable success of CN will derive largely from the strong commitment of a population that is constantly mobilized to the rallying platform of the fact that going forward together is our best option for building a nation that will occupy its deserved place in the global community. May God continue to lead, guide and protect us. Amen.

AN AKWA IBOM PSYCHIATRIC DOCTOR SACKED FOR STEALING BEDS

tor Dr Nwaopara A.U, a Consultant and Medical Superintendent, Psychiatric Hospital, Eket, has been sacked by the Akwa Ibom Government for allegedly stealing six hospital beds and converting them to personal use. According to PM News, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Dominic Ukpong made the disclosure while addressing the management and staff of the hospital in Eket on Friday. He alleged that the doctor stole the beds in October last year and converted them to use in his private hospital in Marina area of Eket. But Dr Nwaopara stated that the matter was in court. “We have terminated the appointment of the doctor who stole the beds in the psychiatric hospital and converted them to personal use. “We will not condone such attitude from any doctor. I want to thank the management of the hospital for their cooperation during the investigations,” Ukpong said. The commissioner, however, observed that the psychiatric hospital was one of the most neglected in the state. He said that the hospital lacked facilities and lamented that its management failed to notify the health authorities in the state. He said the hospital faced challenges, including inadequate space, lack of equipment, shortage of staff, zero subvention, and promised to tackle the challenges. Ukpong, however, thanked the hospital management for its services to the state despite the challenges. He reassured the management that the state government would equip the hospital very soon.

Sanchez In Manchester for medical while Mkhitaryan in London to finalise his move

I The Chilean is heading to Manchester to complete his medical checks, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan is in London to finalise his move to the Gunners. Alexis Sanchez has boarded a private jet bound for Manchester as he travels to undergo a medical and finalise his January transfer to United. The Arsenal star was flanked by his best friend, and his agent Fernando Felicevich was also present, with United having made the arrangements to charter the aircraft. Alexis will earn around £14 million a year with United, making him one of the best-paid players in Premier League history, with agent fees expected to reach the £10m mark. The transfer taking the Chilean to Old Trafford will see Henrikh Mkhitaryan heading in the opposite direction and Goal understands the deal will be a straight swap, with no cash incentives involved. Indeed, the former Dortmund winger was spotted in London with his agent Mino Raiola on Saturday, and Goal understands the 29-year-old will also undergo his medical tests with the Gunners on Sunday. Confirmation of the transfer is likely to arrive from both clubs on Monday as one of the most intriguing January deals in Premier League history draws to a conclusion. Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, remained cautious when asked about the possible signing of Alexis in his post-match press conference following the 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday. The Portuguese told supporters to expect a transfer either "soon or never", adding: "I think it's so close, so close. So close that if it doesn't happen, it's not going to happen. So I am positive. "I know that my people are doing absolutely everything they can - the owners with the green light and Mr [Ed] Woodward working hard. "I think everybody is giving everything they can and I think we're going to be successful." Alexis posted a video on his Instagram account to show that he was boarding the private jet bound for Manchester, with, ironically, 'No Easy Way Out' from the Rocky IV film playing over the top of the short clip. And there was further social media activity, with the 29-year-old forward retweeting an article that disagreed with assertions that the Chilean is a footballing mercenary for leaving Emirates Stadium for Mourinho's United.
As well as signing Mkhitaryan, Arsenal are also hoping to complete a deal for Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January window. The German club's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed on Saturday that there had been an approach for the Gabon international, with the Gunners having agreed personal terms with the 28-year-old. Wenger will not, however, be bringing in Bordeaux winger Malcom in the winter window, with the north Londoners having pulled out of the race to sign the Brazilian, at least until the summer.

EFCC Probing Dasuki’s aide for alleged diversion of N36.4b mentor for dams protection

• EFCC traces N3.12b meant to protect dams, wells to his company’s account •Agency investigates release of N10b for 2015 governorship poll The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced N3.12billion to the bank account of a company allegedly owned by a Special Assistant to a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd). The sum is suspected to have been diverted from about N36.4billion voted by the Goodluck Jonathan administration for the protection of dams, wells and sources of water in the North-East against being poisoned by Boko Haram. Investigation by the EFCC shows that only N3.12billion of the N36.4billion was paid to a company allegedly owned by the suspect. A review of the company’s account suggests that the cash may have been used for “political and personal patronage. Detectives of EFCC are working on the theory that the N3.12billion was shared by politicians, friends of the government and relations of the former NSA. It has already set up a team to interrogate suspected beneficiaries of the N3.12billion to explain the services rendered to deserve such a huge payment. The balance of N33billion which is supposed to be in an account domiciled in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) is yet to be traced. It was operated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The Nation gathered that sometime in 2011, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan received a memo alleging threats by Boko Haram to poison all the dams, wells and sources of water in the North-East and other insurgency flashpoints in the country. Although Jonathan initially ignored the memo, it was exhumed in March 2014 by the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) when the insurgency got ferocious. The memo recommended the need to protect the sources of water in the North-East. Investigators of the alleged diversion said: “Following the delay in attending to the request, a fresh memo was raised in March 2014. At the end of the day, about N36.4billion was approved and released to ONSA through the Naira account maintained by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation but operated by the ex-NSA and the Permanent Secretary, Special Services. “From the N36.4billion, about N3, 125,000,000 were released to a company already traced to a former Special Assistant to the ex-NSA. Detectives have discovered that the balance of over N33billion was diverted. “Even the profiling of the N3, 125,000,000 account of the slush company indicated that the cash was used for political and personal patronage including transfer to some relations of the ex-NSA.” A highly placed source in EFCC confirmed yesterday that operatives “are working round the clock to track the whereabouts of over N33billion because no contract was executed for the protection of the dams and other sources of water in the North-East. “As for the beneficiaries of the N3.125billion, we are already on their trail through bank records, accounts and Bank Verification Number (BVN) which have proved useful to our operations. We will ensure the recovery of the diverted funds.” The latest bend of the investigation also showed curious spending of N20billion by ONSA between March and May 2015. It was learnt that detectives claimed that “the purpose of the cash withdrawals from the government’s account was unknown.” Sources said: “Immediately after the Presidential Election on March 28, 2015, ONSA requested for another N10billion to prepare for the Governorship Election on April 11. It was approved again by the ex-President. “And in May 2015, another N10billion was approved and released to ONSA. All these funds were remitted to ONSA outside the budget allocated to security agencies for the 2015 General Elections. “Our operatives are investigating the rationale behind these releases; how the funds were diverted; culpable officers and how to recover the cash. “So far, our team of investigators cannot trace any project executed with the N36.4billion to protect water sources from being poisoned by Boko Haram.” Responding to a question, the source added: “About one and half years after the N36.4billion were withdrawn, the Nigerian Army on September 2015 confirmed that some sources of water in Borno State were polluted and poisoned by the insurgents. “We strongly suspected that the votes for the protection of sources of water were diverted or converted into personal use.” On September 15, 2015, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations said information reaching its Theatre Command, Operation Lafiya Dole indicated that Boko Haram terrorists had now resorted to poisoning water sources like wells and streams in areas they were dislodged by gallant troops or areas threatened by offensive operations. He said the insurgents had allegedly “poisoned cattle water ponds in Kangallam village along Marte and Abadam axis in Borno State where a large number of cattle died after drinking water from the ponds.” “The action of the terrorists is no doubt aimed at taking their own pound of flesh on the innocent citizens and livestock as a result of the unbearable offensive operations through the combined effort of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force to rout them out completely from their enclaves and hide-outs all over the North East. “In view of this development, citizens are called upon to avoid as much as possible drinking water from unverified sources, especially in locations that troops routed out Boko Haram terrorists.” Dasuki is currently standing trial for corruption related cases.

WENGER: ALEXIS LOSS WON'T BE AS PAINFUL TO ARSENAL AS MUCH AS VAN PERSIE EXIT

The Arsenal boss doesn't believe that losing the Chilean forward will be nearly as painful for Gunners fans as the loss of their former star was Arsene Wenger is resigned to losing Alexis Sanchez and believes that Arsenal fans have made their peace with him leaving as well, claiming that the loss of former forward Robin van Persie to the same Manchester United side in 2012 was much more painful. Arsenal and Manchester United are thought to be nearing a conclusion on negotiations of a swap deal that will see Henrikh Mkhitaryan heading to London as Sanchez moves the other way. The move is a blow to the Gunners, with Wenger having already admitted that a deal was close to completion.

Where is $500 million recovered from the late Gen. Sani Abacha’s family? EFCC ASKING

Where is $500 million recovered from the late Gen. Sani Abacha’s family? This is the question the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is battling to answer. The cash was recovered from the family of the late Head of State during ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. It was repatriated from slush accounts in foreign jurisdictions. The foreign governments, which released the loot to the Federal Government after hard negotiations, demanded that the cash be used for concrete developments, including infrastructure, such as roads, water, healthcare and education. EFCC detectives tracking the $500million have discovered that it was diverted. Of the $500million, about $250million was released to the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA)during the tenure of Col. Sambo Dasuki without appropriation. The balance of $250million cannot be traced yet. The Nation learnt that detectives discovered that the $250million was illegally withdrawn barely two months to the end of Jonathan’s administration. Investigators are said to be working on clues that part of the cash was spent on “extraneous matters, including media services, opinion polls and personal matters”. According to a fact-sheet on the investigation, the $250million was withdrawn between March 2, 2015 and April 21, 2015. About $36,155,000 (N13,015,800billion) of the $250million was also withdrawn in cash “without any purpose” on March 2nd, 9th, 16th and 18th of 2015. Detectives have retrieved documents relating to the alleged “re-looting” of the Abacha loot. In the fact-sheet, the ONSA in a memo of January 12, 2015, asked the former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to transfer $300million . The memo said: “Please refer to our meeting on recovered funds. You are pleased requested to remit the sum of $300m and £5.5m to the following account being ONSA share as agreed. Account name: CBN (NSA Foreign Operation; Account number: -100367-USD-CABANK30 Bank; Address: 28, Finsbury Circus, London. Please accept the assurances of my highest esteem.” Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, in a memo to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, requested for $300m from the Abacha loot. Only $250million was released to the ex-NSA. The January 20, 2015 memo said: “Attached, please find a request by the NSA for the transfer of $300m and British pounds (£5.5m) of the recovered Abacha funds to ONSA operations account. The NSA has explained that this is to enable purchase of ammunition, security and other intelligence equipment for the security agencies in order to enable them confront the ongoing Boko Haram threat. “His request is sequel to the meeting you chaired with the committee on use of recovered funds where decision was made that recovered Abacha funds would be split 50-50 between urgent security needs to confront Boko Haram and development needs (including a portion for the Future Generations window of Sovereign Wealth Fund). “This letter is to seek your approval to borrow these funds, for now, to disburse to the NSA. These funds form part of projected FG Independent Revenue to be appropriated. “In light of this and for accountability, given the peculiar nature of security and intelligence transactions, we would expect the NSA to account to your Excellency for the utilisation of the funds.” On January 29, 2015, the ex-President responded to the ex-Minister as follows: “CME/HMF, approved.” To back his approval, Dr. Jonathan through his Senior Special Assistant (Admin) Matt Aikhionbare, in a memo of January 30, 2015 said: “RE: Request by NSA for transfer of funds.” I am directed to forward Ref A to you and convey to you Mr. President’s approval. Humbly submitted for your further action, Ma’am.” Detectives have discovered that only $250million out of the $300million requested was paid to ONSA. 16/2/15 In a letter of February 16, 2015, the then Director of Funds of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. M.K. Dikwa, in a memo to the CBN Governor, conveyed the mandate to transfer the $250million. The memo said: “. You are hereby requested to immediately effect fund transfer as below($250m) being amount disbursed to enable for the purchase of ammunition, security and other intelligence equipment for the security agencies in order to enable them fully confront the ongoing Boko Haram threat. “As per Mr. President’s approval on CME-HMF/FMF/2015/18 dated 20th January 2015 conveyed via State Houses letter No PRES/87/MF /-2/520 dated 30th January 2015. NSA’s letter Ref. No. NSA/362/5 dated 5th March 2015 also refers.” A source said: “The $250million was duly approved by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan; the ex-NSA did not commit any infractions. He acted in the interest of the country. It is incorrect for EFCC to assume that the $250million was diverted because it was used to purchase vital equipment.” A table of how the $250million was spent was obtained by our correspondent last night. An EFCC source, who spoke in confidence, said: “We will need to interact with the former Minister of Finance, Okonjo-Iweala, to guide us on the contents of her letter, especially on the legality of the withdrawal of the $250million. “We will find out what she meant by to ‘borrow these funds’ and these ‘funds form part of projected FG Independent Revenue to be appropriated.’ She should assist investigators on whether or not the ex-NSA accounted to Jonathan for the ‘utilization of the funds.’ A former Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, had claimed that Abacha “took over $6 billion from Nigeria”. He also said $2 billion was recovered when he was in charge of the anti-graft agency. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project(SERAP) had through its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, on 21 September 2015 sent an access to information request to the President, World Bank Group, asking him to “exercise the bank’s prerogative to release documents relating to spending of recovered assets stolen by late Gen. Sani Abacha”. SERAP asked the World Bank President to “disclose information about the Bank’s role in the implementation of any projects funded by the recovered assets and any other on-going repatriation initiatives on Nigeria with which the bank is engaged.” It said: “The request is pursuant to the World Bank’s Access to Information Policy (The Policy), approved by the Board on June 30 2015. SERAP notes that one of the policy’s guiding principles is to maximise access to information. There is also clear public interest in Nigerians knowing about the Bank’s supervisory role and specifically its involvement in the implementation of projects on which repatriated funds were spent.” But Okonjo-Iweala in 2015 insisted that she had no case to answer. She said: “Former President Jonathan set up a Committee comprising the former Minister of Justice, former NSA and the former Minister of Finance to determine how best to use both the returned and expected funds for development. “The NSA made a case for using the returned funds for urgent security operations since, he noted, there cannot be any development without peace and security. Based on this, a decision was taken to deploy about $322m for the military operations, while the expected $700m would be applied for development programmes as originally conceived. “Following the discussions and based on the urgency of the NSA’s memo, Dr Okonjo-Iweala requested the President to approve the transfer of the requested amount to the NSA’s Office for the specified purposes. “But, as captured in the memo, she insisted on three conditions: a. only a part, not the entire Abacha funds would be spent on the arms; the rest would be invested in developmental projects as originally conceived b. the money was to be treated as borrowed funds which would be paid back as soon as possible c. the NSA’s office was to account for the spending to the President who was the Commander in Chief, given the fact that the Minister of Finance is not part of the security architecture and does not participate in the Security Council. “The attempt to link the former Minister’s name to any misuse of these funds for any purpose other than security as far as she understood it is totally false and cannot stand.”

2019 Election: It’s too early for Buhari to talk about says Bashir Ahmad

President Muhamamdu Buhari’s belief is that it is too early to be talking about 2019 elections when there are many important issues on his desk. The President’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, states this on his Twitter handle, @BashirAhmaad, on Thursday. Ahmad was reacting to a report by Reuters quoting the President as saying in a radio interview that he had yet to decide if he would re-contest or not. The medium has since withdrawn the report. Before the report was withdrawn, Ahmad had explained that Buhari did not grant any radio interview. He wrote, “This report from @Reuters is not true. President @MBuhari didn’t grant any radio interview where he talked about 2019 election. “For Mr. President, it’s too early to start talking about next year’s elections when there are so many important and pressing issues on his desk.” Meanwhile, the Presidency on Thursday quoted a London-based magazine,The Economist, as disowning a publication which claimed that Nigerians have shown unprecedented level of patience with Buhari. The publication is said to have been making the rounds on the social media and on some websites in the country, and beyond. In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the Presidency enjoined Nigerians to be watchful and circumspect about the kind of information they are exposed to, and share, “especially in this period when purveyors of fake news abound.” Adesina quoted a January 18 letter for the magazine’s Africa Editor, Jonathan Rosenthal, as disowning the report. The letter read, “It has come to my attention that an article has been circulating on social media and been published on various websites that purports to have been written or published by The Economist. “The article with the headline ‘The Unprecedented Level of Patience Shown to Buhari’ was not written nor published by The Economist. Any claims connecting it to The Economist are false.”

Peace Corp Bill Signed By Senate and gave IGP 14days To bring Benue killers to justice

Senate yesterday gave the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, 14-day ultimatum to arrest, investigate and hand over to Benue State Attorney General for prosecution the perpetrators of killings that recently took place in Benue State. It also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to rise up to the responsibility of his office which primarily is to provide security for the citizenry by halting the wanton killings in the land arising from general insecurity. Majority of the senators however called for the establishment of state police and signing of Nigeria Peace Corps Bill into law for purposes of intelligence gathering and adequate security at the grassroots. The senate resolutions followed the consideration of reports of its special ad- hoc committee on security presented to it yesterday by the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan ( APC Yobe North). Other recommendations of the committee adopted by the senate were that a national security summit should be convened as a matter of national urgency where the various security stakeholders at the centre would rub minds with the 36 states governors, their Commissioners of Police and Chief Judges for way out of the failing security architecture. It also urged the federal government through the Ministry of Agriculture to as a matter of urgency, convene a special National Council on Agriculture meeting to deliberate on the development and modernization of Nigeria’s livestock and dairy industry. That federal government should immediately re-examine the current deployment of security forces, particularly the Police, DSS and Civil Defence Corp for effective presence in the rural areas starting from the conflict prone areas around Niger, Benue, Nasarawa , Taraba , Adamawa, Zamfara , Kaduna etc . Earlier before the adoption of the recommendations, Senators had one after the other condemned the wanton killings in the land and lampooned President Buhari and heads of security agencies for alleged lackadaisical attitude to the challenge. First to speak in this direction was the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu who declared that the killings in the land is assuming alarming proportion requiring emergency attention. He specifically revisited the issue of creation of state police which according to him has become very necessary now. He said, “The killings that is going on in Nigeria is assuming an alarming proportion and very disturbing. It is taking the dimension of football competition, where there are matches and return matches. “What we have here in Nigeria are situations of killings and then retaliations as expected. And as a responsible parliament we must rise to the situation by saying enough is enough. I don’t expect us to sit down here and not do anything. Nigerians expect us not only to say something but do something. “This brings me to the most important section 14(2b) of constitution and that section of the constitution is saying that the principal purpose of government is provision of security and welfare of the people. “For us to fill the impart of what we should do and if you read section 42 of the constitution, we should have peace and security before we begin to talk of infrastructure and this is where the need for state police comes in. “It is time for us to see how it has worked in other countries of the world and by so doing more Nigerians would be secured.” Other senators who spoke after him including Senator Kabiru Marafa ( APC Zamfara Central), the Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, Sam Anyanwu, Barnabas Gemade, George Akume etc, also concurred to the need for state police. In addition to the state police argument, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law the Nigeria Peace Corps Bill before him for enhancement of intelligence gathering and security at the grassroots. In his own contribution, Senator Shehu Sani ( APC Kaduna Central), told his colleagues to call a spade a spade, by declaring that President Buhari as the commander in chief of the nation’s armed forces should be told the bitter truth of non-performance in ensuring security of lives and property of Nigerians. “ This is not the time for diplomacy and courtesy. This is the time to provide leadership for a nation that is in national emergency and national distress. “Let the president wake up and protect the country. We are living in a country where there is complicit reward for violence. “ Things are not going right in this country, we are failing, people are dying in their thousands, kidnappings, violence. “The president should rise up to the occasion. We are shifting blames trying to evade the truth. We cannot solve this problem, Nigerian political class and the political establishment are more interested in the 2019 general elections than the life of our people. They are more interested in the INEC timetable. “There must be a clear distinction between armed herdsmen who must be confronted frontally and Fulani cattle rearers. People have lost hope in the government, we are here trying to massage the ego, we don’t want to confront the presidency and the president because people want to come back to the 9th senate, they don’t want to lose the ticket”, he said. Sani’s submission was reechoed by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who in his remarks called on the President to wake up from his slumber and act fast. “The problem of killings across the country is clearly a wakeup call on the President, heads of the security agencies and of course the government as a whole to urgently do the needful”, he said.

Get 20GB Worth Of Data For Just N1000 on Airtel

Please note that this is not a cheat, It's actually legit .You get 2GB for N100 when you port your Airtel SIM to other networks especially MTN and the data lasts for 30 days. The most interesting part of this trick is you can even accumulate the data. In other words, the more you recharge N100, the more you get 2GB added to your line. With this you can get 4GB for N200, 10GB for just N500, 20GB for N1000 and so on. So pickup that sim you haven't been using and port to Airtel. There's a catch to it though, The Airtel SIM porting process is free of charge but you have to adhere to the official guidelines from Airtel in order to make it a success. You must also load your recharge cards via e-channels (I recommend using your bank app or quickteller for this) else you won't get the 2GB data bonus. Just follow the procedures below. REQUIREMENTS ✔ Valid ID card (Voters card, drivers license, etc) ✔️ Registered Sim You want to port (MTN works better) HOW TO PORT FROM OTHER NETWORK TO AIRTEL NETWORK ✔️ Locate the nearest Airtel office around you with the above requirements. ✔️ Tell them you want to Port your existing sim (any network) to Airtel ✔️ They will present you with a form to fill (Follow Customer Care Procedures) ✔️ After that, you will receive an SMS from Airtel on the old/existing operator SIM telling you (You wish to port your line) ✔️ At this stage, you may not see service in your phone for about 2 hours. It's a ‘no service period’ which will begin after the porting time. ✔️ Now reboot your phone as soon as the old operator Network signal has disappeared. ✔️ After the ‘no service period’, you can replace your existing operator’s SIM card with the new airtel SIM card in your handset. At this juncture, Airtel will send you a confirmation message that your sim has been ported. The above procedure is the main important part of this tutorial and if you have completed it, you are 90% done. Follow the final stages to complete the process and start enjoying. HOW TO GET AIRTEL 2GB FOR N100 ✔ Load a N100 recharge on your new Airtel ported line via your Online banking app. PLS Do not buy a recharge card 💳 else it won't work. Only recharge via the method above. ✔️ You will get 2GB data after recharging and it valid for 30 days ✔️ The more you recharge with N100, the more data you accumulate. Meaning you can accumulate upto 20GB for N1,000. To check your data balance dial *223#.

MTN 5G NETWORK: FIRST IN Africa, set to roll out soon

MTN says it has achieved download speeds of more than 20 gigabits per second in its first trial of fifth-generation (5G) technology. “This is the highest achieved on a mobile network in Africa‚” the service provider said in a statement on Monday. It said it was ready to deploy the technology commercially but could not do so until it had access to additional frequency spectrum. The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa‚ which regulates spectrum‚ has not yet allocated spectrum for 4G infrastructure‚ TechCentral reported‚ forcing operators to reallocate 2G and 3G spectrum. “There is no doubt that 5G will offer the consumer higher speeds and lower latency‚ but to achieve this we need the capacity that comes with additional spectrum. MTN has a 4G license in Nigeria and could look forward deploying the technology in the country in the near future. MTN has collaborated with network equipment provider Ericsson on its 5G trial and found that the technology is at least 100 times faster than 4G.
