DEATH AT GRADUATION: AS Auchi Poly Student Killed At Her Graduation Party
It was supposed to be celebration of a successful completion of her academic pursuit, but the celebration turned sour when a graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, Miss Uloko Laurenta Apaume, was allegedly shot dead by a member of the Auchi community vigilance group during her graduation party.
It was gathered that Uloko, a Banking and Finance graduate, was killed on Friday night by a stray bullet from a vigilance group operative, who was at the party to provide security for the students, who had signed off from the polytechnic after writing their final examination.
It was gathered that the students in jubilation after writing their last paper on Thursday invited the vigilance group members to the party, as part of the tradition to help secure the place for a peaceful celebration of a successful completion of their Higher National Diploma (HND).
It was learnt that during the celebration, a member of the local security joined in the celebration with the students and fired into the air but the bullet failed to come out.
According to a source, “the security man lowered his gun to check why it failed to release bullet after firing and in the process the bullet discharge itself and accidentally killed the girl who was celebrating on the spot.”
The development cause panic as the students scampered for safety, even as the suspect had been arrested by the police.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, who described the incident as unfortunate, said it was clearly a misadventure and not intentional killing.
“The vigilance men, according to the report of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) on ground, had been invited by the students and it was in the night. It was clearly a misadventure; it was not an intentional killing as there is no record of any sort that there had been malice between the late student or any student for that matter and the vigilance men. So, the vigilance man had an accidental discharge so to say while the celebration was on.”
According to him, the suspect is already in custody, assuring that the police are doing everything to pacify the students so that there would be no reprisal attack on innocent citizens.
Meanwhile, students of Auchi Polytechnic on Saturday protested against the killing of Uloko. The students blocked major roads in the vicinity and called for vigilance groups across the country to be stopped from using guns, as this is not the first time this type of incidence is happening.
AN IBADAN FAMILY THAT HAVE AN OVER 77 YEAR OLD CROCODILE LIVING WITH THEM
Hello Oduduwa team have reported the story of a family that traditionally rears crocodile as a cultural value passed on from their dead parents in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Read the interesting story below:
Ask anyone around the Oje axis in Ibadan for directions to Delesolu Compound, you can be sure you’ll get there without having to ask again. “Ile Dele”, as they call it, is well known especially because a crocodile is being reared there.
In a bid to find out why a crocodile is being reared in a compound in the heart of one of Ibadan’s most popular markets in Ibadan, the quartet of Hello Oduduwa reporters - Emmanuel Okafor, Wole Adejumo, Segunfunmi Adedeji, Tunde Ayanda and Tunde Ajibade went to the compound.
Having to wait as the head of the family, Chief Raufu Yesufu Delesolu, who doubles as the Oota Olubadan of Ibadanland was holding court proved useful. It provided a firsthand experience of what happens in Igbejo Delesolu. He was overseeing a matter brought by traders in the market. When he had settled the matter, we were ushered into the hall and one after the other, Chief Delesolu did justice to the questions posed by the team.
When asked what was behind the rearing of a crocodile by the family, his response was “it is not a religious thing; it is just a family tradition. When our father came to Ibadan as a soldier, he had it.
He had first settled in Ojaaba but when the place became too small for him and his family, he approached Iba Oluyole who was ruling Ibadan then and he gave him the place we are now. And when they came, they agreed that there had to be a crocodile”.
While making it clear that the tradition is as old as Oje Market itself, he shed more light as he said “the present crocodile is not the first. The present one was brought in 1940”. Not done, Chief Delesolu explained that “we moved into this hall in 1949. That was when I was in Class One. And since then, I have never seen anyone bringing palm oil or salt to say they are doing any ritual. The only instruction our parents would give us was that we should go and fetch water and pour it where the crocodile is. Sometimes they would tell us to fetch six buckets each and we would be in a hurry to do so; in order to have time to play football”.
He agreed that the crocodile has been a centre of attraction for decades; “back then, Europeans would come and see the crocodile. They were the ones that made us know that we should be feeding it with chicken. Our fathers never gave it chicken; all they did was just pour water. It used to go out then. It would go and stay in the pond near Ojo ‘Badan’s house. Maybe if not for that pond, it would have gone away long ago.
Funny enough some herbalists would come and even people looking for children. There was a day some people in white clothes came and wanted to start circling the place but we quickly stopped them so that they won’t give our compound a bad name. I said this is not the Ka’aba, why would you be going round it? So we drove them away”.
But does the croc perform any particular function? Oloye Delesolu said “as a family, we believe there are some things that cannot be seen by the ordinary eye. Maybe it has a way of protecting children in the compound. For instance, high fever is not heard of in the compound. You can see that we ran a pipe there; those days we used to pour water and drain the water manually, it would sometimes snatch containers and damage them with its teeth.
It lays eggs, even without mating. It laid eggs some months ago and to retrieve the eggs, we would trick it with a chicken and use the wood there to enclose it at the other end before someone can enter to pack the eggs.
There is nothing religious about it; it is just a family tradition. We are not the only ones that have a crocodile in Ibadan.”
We didn’t leave without asking if there a taboo guiding the tradition or what would happen if there is no crocodile , he looked at the team and said “like I said, it is not a religion. When you know that this thing is your tradition, your family custom, that oh, this was how my fathers did it, you will want to continue that way.
It has never harmed anyone and we don’t even allow it to go out so it is not posing any danger to anybody.
We buy chicken for it but meat sellers in the market come to give it meat, sometimes when animals get killed by vehicles, they will come and give it to the crocodile”.
Again we asked, can there be more than one? “Sometimes Hausa traders bring crocodiles for us to buy but we don’t oblige them because we are not rearing it for food so we don’t need more than one at a time. And when that one dies, whoever is the head of the family at that time will buy a new one”.
When we asked how Igbejo Delesolu came to be, Chief Delesolu laughed and said “Allahu Akbar, this is our own Aso Rock because our family has about 131 compounds extending from Alafara Oje. Igbejo is what our fathers had before the British came with their court system and established customary courts. What we do here is to ensure that peace reigns in the market and till date, if there are disputes in the market they will come here and the matter will be resolved”

MONKEY POX SPREAD: 31 monkey pox cases in Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, others
Monkey pox, which started with an index case in Bayelsa on September 22, has spread to six other states, including Lagos.
There are 31 cases, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said yesterday.
NCDC National Coordinator/Chief Executive Officer Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu listed the states as Bayelsa, Rivers, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Cross River.
He said samples had been collected from each suspected case for laboratory confirmation.
Said Ihekweazu: “It is unlikely that many of the suspected cases are actually monkey pox, but all are being investigated.”
He said all the suspected cases were receiving medical care and the patients improving clinically in their various states.
Ihekweazu said the centre had activated an Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) to coordinate the outbreak investigation and response across the affected states. “The EOC is currently supporting state ministries of Health in their response to the outbreak through active case finding, epidemiological investigation and contact tracing. Measures have been put in place to ensure effective sample collection and testing to enable laboratory confirmation. Risk communication activities have been heightened to advise the public on preventive measures. All 36 states and the FCT have been notified for preparedness,” he explained.
The Lagos State Government confirmed yesterday that it had recorded two suspected cases and appealed to residents to remain calm and vigilant.
Commissioner for Health Dr. Jide Idris told reporters that the two suspected cases were being investigated.
“Though no confirmed case has been recorded, there is need to sensitise members of the public and provide adequate information on measures for prevention and control of the disease in line with the policy of the state government,” he said.
Idris said the two suspected cases were recorded in a private hospital which he did not name.
He added that one of the suspected cases just came from Bayelsa State and ate bush meat.
Idris said the two suspected cases had been quarantined in their various houses pending the result of the investigation.
The commissioner said in the wake of this outbreak, the government was reiterating the need for members of the public to observe and maintain a high standard of personal and environmental hygiene at all times as part of the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease to the State.
He urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspected case of the disease to the nearest public health facility or the Directorate of Disease Control in the Ministry of Health.
“Also, health workers are advised to practise universal safety precautions in the management of suspected or confirmed cases, wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment when attending to cases, wash hands after each contact with patient or contaminated materials while surveillance system must be strengthened.
“The state government has mobilised the Disease Surveillance Officers in the 57 LGAs and LCDAs in the state and health workers in both public and private health facilities have been placed on high alert,” Idris said.
Idris called on residents to remain calm and go about their businesses without fear as the government had put in place adequate measures to effectively prevent and control the spread of the infection to the state.
“In case of any suspected case of Monkey Pox, the Lagos State Ministry of Health should be notified through the following mobile lines: 08037170614, 09087106072,” the commissioner said.
How Fraudster swindled Canadian varsity of US$9.5m
A Canadian university said Friday it was swindled out of nearly Can$12 million (US$9.5m) in an online phishing scam that fooled staff into transferring funds into the wrong bank accounts.
Hackers posing as a construction company that provided services to MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta sent emails to school employees advising of changes to the company’s banking information, said school spokesman David Beharry.
Before discovering the fraud last week, the school transferred Can$11.8 million (US$9.5 million) into the hackers’ accounts, he said.
University officials realized something was wrong when the construction firm called to ask why it had not been paid for its work.
Beharry said more than a dozen construction firms in the Edmonton area had been targeted in the scam.
Working with authorities, the university was able to freeze Can$11.4 million of the funds traced to three accounts in Montreal and Hong Kong.
But Can$400,000 still remains unaccounted for.
The fraud was one of the largest of its kind in Canada, according to local media.
Beharry said it “came down to human error.”

The majority of embassies will assume that applicants are seeking permanent entry into their country until you prove them otherwise. And one way to prove them otherwise is to present evidence that you have strong economic reasons to return to your country following your stay. What other way to do this than your bank statement? Hence, ensure that your cash inflow and outflow are credible. They do not want to give visas to criminals.
Your visa agent cannot answer basic visa questions
If your visa agent promises to deliver to you a visa without asking you basic questions that only you have answers to, you should feel very uncomfortable about that application. It may most likely be rejected.
You have a record visa denials
If you have a record of refusals from a particular embassy, they will know that you arguably are desperate to leave your country. If you have been refused once at any embassy, they have the record. Hence, do not submit any visa application without consulting reliable visa businesses for advice. The more you are rejected, the more your visa application will be denied and vice-versa.
You apply for the visa category
There are different visa categories and, for every visa you are applying for it must correspond with your lifestyle. If it does not support the category of visa you are applying for, that is a strong signal, which you address before even submitting your application or else you will suffer the embarrassment of a rejection.
You have an uneasy feeling about an answer
If you have answered a question on your application but you don't feel comfortable about the answer you have provided, then you need to take steps back and peruse your responses again. The reason is that, you will unconsciously communicate your uneasy feelings to your interviewer while answering that question; particularly if they seem interested in that particular answer.

NSCD Arrested A Man in Ogun for attempting to commit suicide over N50,000 ‘Lapo’ loan
A man identified as Abiodun Onipede has been arrested for attempting to commit suicide over his inability to refund a fifty Thousand ‘Lapo’ loan.
Abiodun Onipede Onipede who was arrested by the Anti-Vandal team of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State command while attempting to mount the rope in the bush along Ayetoro road in Abeokuta to take his life .
Vanguard gathered that he had tied the rope to a big tree and was about hanging himself when a member of the team who wanted to ease himself in the bush stumbled on him and stopped .
It was further gathered that, the Suspect, a commercial Tricyclist was a 200 level drop-out of Federal College of Education, Osiele due to financial incapability. Onipede had lost one of his children due to his inability to pay the hospital bills.
He had raised money for the child surgery which was successful but, later lost him after complication . While speaking with newsmen, Onipede, a 34-year old father of five said he was a former staff of Traffic Compliance and Agency in the state.
He said his inability to perform his responsibility as the head of the family led him to attempt suicide . He added that his failure to pay the ‘Lapo’ loan, an informal money lender syndicate forced him to take the decision to take his life. ‘Lapo’ loan is a popular loan among the Yoruba entities; where people are being lent money with a high interest.
According to him,
I am a 200 level Drop-out of Federal College of Education, Osiele, I dropped out because I could not get financial assistance to continue. “Due to the health problem of my child in 2008, I had to drop out so that I could have some money to take care of my sick child. But, we later lost the child in 2009 because we were unable to pay some hospital bills after people have helped us in raising money for the surgery.
“I was duped by some people and they even threatened me, and this made me to leave Abeokuta for Akwa-Ibom state.
It was when I came back after a year that I discovered I have been sacked from the TRACE.
“I am frustrated because am owing a lot of people ranging from house bill to electricity bill, and some other bills. I am ashamed of myself because am not a responsible man, I cannot cater for my family as a head. “The Lapo officials have used OPC to arrest my wife because of the money, if not for the help of my pastor. Am just frustrated because I have to pay N3,000 every Friday and I am presently jobless. And I still have like N24,000 to balance .
“I cannot pay the hospital bill of my mother, I can’t take care of her, I was told she is now on the street begging to survive. No family to help me, we have been living in abject poverty. “What added to my conclusion to commit suicide was due to my inability to refund the ‘Lapo’ loan I collected when I wanted to start my tricycle business. The officials of the Lapo have been giving my family tough times for sometimes now, because, I cannot afford to be repaying N3,000 every Friday”, he said.
He however, said he regretted his action, saying,
“ it was not my fault, am just a frustrated man that does not know what else to do. “I wish to go back to school; I want the government to help me with a job that can cater for my family and other things that are important”.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Ogbonnaya Dyke described it as a crime against the state for someone to try to take his life. Ogbonnayah added that the suspect will be handed over to the police, after the NSCDC Intelligence Unit has done proper work.
His word,“Since the matter is under our Crisis management team, we have to swing into action to address the situation. “It is a crime against the state for someone to try to take his life. Necessary actions will be taken by the Corps in addressing the situation. He is going to be handed over to the police after our intelligence Unit has done its proper work”.
The Federal Government has finally asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to revoke the bail granted the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Mr. Namdi Kanu, who is being prosecuted along with others on treasonable felony charges.
The prosecution made this request in an application it filed before the court and served on Kanu on Friday.
Saturday PUNCH had exclusively reported in its July 22, 2017 edition that there were plans by the Federal Government to ask court to revoke the bail granted Kanu on April 25, 2017.
The application seeking the revocation of Kanu’s bail was released to journalists in Abuja on Friday by the Special Assistant to the Attorney-General of the Federation on Media and Publicity, Mr. Salihu Isah.
Kanu had, earlier in his application filed on July 1, 2017, urged the court to vary the conditions of the bail granted him on April 25, 2017.
But the Federal Government hinged its fresh motion seeking the revocation of Kanu’s bail on the grounds that the IPOB leader had flouted the terms and conditions of the bail.
Justice Binta Nyako had, in her ruling delivered on April 25, granted bail to Kanu, but dismissed the separate bail applications filed by his co-defendants — the National Coordinator of IPOB, Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe; an IPOB member, Benjamin Madubugwu, and a former Field Maintenance Engineer seconded to the MTN, David Nwawuisi.
Recently, after the court delivered its ruling on the defendants’ bail applications, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Magaji Labaran, amended the charges to include another co-defendant, Bright Chimezie.
In his application filed on July 1, 2017, Kanu maintained that parts of the bail conditions prohibiting him from being seen in a crowd exceeding 10 persons, granting press interviews and holding or attending rallies violated his constitutional rights.
His lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, stated in the motion that the undesirable bail terms and conditions were contained in paragraphs 2(vii) and (viii) of the court’s ruling granting bail to his client on April 25.
But the Federal Government, in its fresh application, asked the court to revoke the bail granted Kanu and order his immediate arrest by the police.
The Federal Government’s counter-affidavit filed in support of the motion and deposed to by a litigation clerk in the Office of the Director Public Prosecutions, pieced together Kanu’s alleged acts of serial violation of the bail conditions imposed by the court.
It maintained that Kanu had flagrantly violated all the bail conditions.
It stated that the essence of the bail, which was for Kanu to look after his health, had been defeated.
According to the prosecution, instead of using the opportunity of his bail to attend to his health needs, Kanu went ahead to inaugurate a security outfit known as the Biafra Security Service.
The prosecution said this constituted a threat to national security.
It also cited an instance of how Kanu allegedly incited his followers “to disrupt, disallow and boycott elections in south East states, starting with Anambra State governorship election scheduled to hold onvbNovember 18, 2017, if the Federal Government failed to hold a referendum for the realisation of the state of Biafra nation.”
US court jails Nigerian hacker For $6.5m fraud
A Nigerian hacker, Obinna Obioha, has been jailed for 51months by a New York federal judge for operating a fraud scheme that swindled$6.5 million from businesses in the U.S. and elsewhere. U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd sentenced Obinna Obioha, 31, for running a scheme in which he instructed hackers to hack into computers and email accounts of individuals around the world using malicious software. Announcing Obioha’s sentence, Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Vadim D. Th omas, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Offi ce of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said, “Obioha, working from Nigeria, was a central fi gure in a fraud scheme using digital disguises and deceit to bilk businesses out of millions of dollars.
“We will continue to track down and bring to justice cybercriminals like Obioha no matter where they operate. I thank the FBI for its terrifi c work in this case identifying and apprehending Obioha,” Jaquith said. FBI Special Agent in Charge Vadim D. Th omas said, “Th ese schemes can rob individuals and businesses of their livelihood. Cyber-crime is a serious threat and the FBI is prepared to go to any lengths to apprehend those like Obioha.” As part of his guilty plea to wire fraud in April 2017,Obioha admitted that, while in Nigeria, he worked with and instructed others to hack into computers and email accounts used by dozens of victims in the United States and around the world. Th e organization infi ltrated victims’ computers and email accounts using malicious software (“malware”). After monitoring victims ‘information to identify imminent commercial transactions, Obioha and his associates created knockoff email addresses that appeared similar to but varied slightly from victims’ legitimate email addresses. Obioha and his associates used those bogus email accounts to send fraudulent invoices to victims, instructing them to wire funds to bank accounts controlled by Obioha and his associates, under the pretense that the wires were payments for actual deals that had been previously negotiated by the victims. Obioha admitted that between January and September 2016, he was involved in at least 50 wire transfers, and that about $6.5 million was sent by wire to bank accounts that he and his associates controlled. Th e accounts received money from fraud victims in New York, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas, among other places. In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Donald N. Hurd described Obioha as “right in the middle of the action” in “very sophisticated criminal activity” designed to achieve “millions of dollars in illegal funds.” Obioha was arrested on October 6, 2016, after fl ying from Lagos, Nigeria, to JFK International Airport. He has been in custody since that time. Th is case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S.Attorney Wayne A. Myers.
10-year-old Indian rape victim gives birth to baby girl
A 10-year-old rape victim whose plea for an abortion was rejected by India’s Supreme Court has given birth to a baby girl, a doctor said Thursday.
The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was raped several times allegedly by an uncle who has since been arrested.
Last month her parents asked the country’s top court to allow her to have a late-term abortion but the request was turned down.
Indian law does not allow medical terminations after 20 weeks unless there is a threat to either the life of the mother or her child.
“She gave birth through C-section today (Thursday). Both the girl and her baby are doing fine,” doctor Dasari Harish told AFP by phone from the northern Indian city of Chandigarh.
“The surgery was uneventful. There were no complications whatsoever. The baby weighed 2.2 kilos (4.8 pounds) and is in the neonatal ICU for now.”
The Press Trust of India news agency said the girl was unaware that she had delivered a child and the parents had decided to put the baby up for adoption.
Her parents have told her that she had a stone in her stomach and had undergone surgery to remove it, PTI said.
India has a grim record of sexual assaults on minors with 20,000 cases of rape or sexual assaults reported in 2015, according to government data.
GET RID OF COMMON COLD WITH THIS TREATMENT TIPS
There are times when the human body just slows down and if at this time you are exposed to infections or harsh weather conditions, you may just come up with symptoms of common colds.
The body’s immune system is compromised and the infection sets in. It could be caused by various infecting agents which have been able to attack your body defense and you become ill.
A cold is a mild viral infection of the nose, throat, sinuses and upper airways. It’s very common and usually clears up on its own within a week or two.
The common cold is a self-limited contagious disease that can be caused by a number of different types of viruses. The common cold is medically referred to as a viral upper respiratory tract infection.
Common colds, known as viral rhinitis, the ordinary cold is among the most common infections among humans. It is primarily an upper respiratory tract infection that can be caused by several virus families. The virus family that is responsible for up to 40 percent of colds is called rhino-virus and it has over 100 distinct virus types.
Since common cold symptoms can be caused by so many viruses, it has not been possible to develop a simple cure for the infection. The common cold should not be mistaken for influenza, which can make you ill for much longer, has more severe symptoms, and can result in hospitalization or lead to serious health problems including pneumonia.
Symptoms
Typical symptoms associated with common cold are well known to both doctors and patients. Over half of patients start by developing a sore throat followed by congestion in the sinuses and the nose, sneezing and a runny nose. These symptoms are usually accompanied by fever, cough, and hoarseness which may outlast them sometimes by a few weeks. High fevers, are however, rare from common cold alone.
• Congestion in the sinuses & nose.
• Cough.
• Sneezing,
• Running nose.
• Fever.
• Headache
• Decreased appetite
• Muscle aches
• Sore throat
• Post-nasal drip
More severe symptoms, including a high temperature (fever), headache and aching muscles can also occur, although these tend to be associated more with flu.
The symptoms will however, last longer if you have developed a viral bronchitis concomitantly. This happens when the same virus infects both your upper airways and the inner airways. Apart from bronchitis the congestion caused by the common cold can create conditions for other illness, with bacterial sinus infections (sinusitis) being the most common. Patients with respiratory track complications such as asthma may experience more severe symptoms lasting for a month or even longer.
Most crucial moments
Patients are at their most infectious during the first 24 hours but they continue to remain infectious for the duration of the symptoms. As the cold progresses, the discharge from your nose will initially be runnier but will thicken and may even turn yellow. However, this is quite normal and there is rarely any need for antibiotics.
In most cases, the common cold goes away within five to ten days although a few symptoms can last for as long as three weeks among certain individuals.
Prevention
Transmission of the common cold commonly occurs when viruses that cause the disease from the mouth, nose or sneezed or coughed as droplets by an infected individual come into direct contact with a healthy individual. Viruses passed from the hand of one individual to another’s hand can also result in transmission if the second person proceed to rub or touch his/her nose or eyes, where a new infection takes root. One can also get infected by coming into contact with surfaces recently touched by a infected individual.
Due to the ease with which the common cold gets transmitted, nearly half the family members, flatmates or roommates also end up getting infected. There is also a high rate of transmission of colds in day care facilities and schools.
How do colds spread?
In general, a person becomes contagious from a few days before their symptoms begin until all of their symptoms have gone. This means most people will be infectious for around two weeks.
You can catch the virus from an infectious person by:
• touching an object or surface contaminated by infected droplets and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes
• touching the skin of someone who has the infected droplets on their skin and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes
• inhaling tiny droplets of fluid that contain the cold virus – these are launched into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes
•Colds spread most easily among groups of people in constant close contact, such as families and children in school or day care facilities. They’re also more frequent during the winter, although it’s not clear exactly why.
A number of different viruses can cause a cold, so it’s possible to have several colds one after the other, as each one may be caused by a different virus.
To lower your chances of getting infected
You can take some simple steps to help prevent the spread of a cold. For example:
1. wash your hands regularly, particularly before touching your nose or mouth and before handling food
2. always sneeze and cough into tissues – this will help prevent the virus-containing droplets from your nose and mouth entering the air, where they can infect others; you should throw away used tissues immediately and wash your hands
3. clean surfaces regularly to keep them free of germs
4. use your own cup, plates, cutlery and kitchen utensils
5. don’t share towels or toys with someone who has a cold
It’s been suggested that vitamin C, zinc and garlic supplements may help reduce your risk of getting a cold, but there’s currently not enough strong evidence to support this.
Hand washing: Adults and children should wash their hands after nose wiping, using the bathroom, preparing food, eating, etc.
• Keep your environment sterile – your priority should be to disinfect commonly touched surfaces such as door knobs, sink handles, sleeping matters, etc with an EPA approved disinfectant.
• Stop the spread of germs by using instant had sanitizers.
• Replace cloth towels with paper towels when using public facilities.
• Drink plenty of fluid to keep your immune system working at the optimal level.
• Consume a healthy diet with plenty of vitamins and minerals to optimize your immune health.
• Avoid using antibiotics unless they are really needed.
• Eat yogurts containing “active cultures” as they may help prevent the common cold.
Treatment
There’s no cure for a cold, but you can look after yourself at home by:
• resting, drinking plenty of fluids and eating healthily
• taking over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, to reduce any fever or discomfort
• using decongestant sprays or tablets to relieve a blocked nose
• trying remedies such as gargling salt water and sucking on menthol sweets
Many painkillers and decongestants are available from pharmacies without a prescription. They’re generally safe for older children and adults to take, but might not be suitable for babies, young children, pregnant women, people with certain underlying health conditions, and those taking certain other medications. Speak to a pharmacist if you’re unsure.
Although it is possible for you to improve the symptoms of common cold using a variety of medical therapies, they do not cure, shorten or prevent the illness. It is advised to try and keep yourself comfortable and get as much rest as possibly, drink lots of fluids and treat the symptoms.
Some of the common ways to treat the symptoms of cold are:-
• Gargle warm salt water to soothe sore throat
• Inhaling steam with or without essential oils and herbal aromas can temporarily relieve nasal congestion
• OTC remedies containing decongestants help relive congestion and stop secretions. They can also be used to stop cough if I is triggered by mucus in the throat.
• Antihistamines are used to relive symptoms of watery eyes and runny nose.
• According to some studies, zinc lozenges can shorten the duration of common cold symptoms.
• Antibiotics should not be used to treat common cold and its symptoms.

NIGERIA TO RECEIVE $600m WORTH OF BOMBERS TO TACKLE BOKO HARAM
Nigeria has got the green light to acquire some American attack planes to fight Boko Haram, officials of the Trump administration have said.
The deal, which is about $600 million, will strengthen Nigeria’s fire power against Boko Haram and other extremists, AP reported.
The approval is despite U.S. concerns about human rights abuses by Nigerian security forces. The military has denied such abuses, which have been a subject of big rows with Amnesty International.
Specifically, Nigeria plans to buy up to 12 Embraer A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from Colorado-based Sierra Nevada Corp, according to officials who were briefed on the matter but spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the development publicly. The aircraft come with sophisticated targeting equipment that the U.S says will help Nigeria fight terrorism, trafficking, insurgency and illicit trade.
In his final days in office, former President Barack Obama put the sale on hold after a Nigerian fighter jet repeatedly bombed a camp near the Cameroon border housing civilians who had fled Boko Haram. Local officials have said more than 230 people were killed. The incident brought new attention to alleged abuses by Nigeria’s forces.
A few weeks later, newly inaugurated President Donald Trump said he supported the sale. He told President Muhammadu Buhari that it would increase American exports and help Nigeria fight terrorists, according to officials.
The move is Trump’s latest to arm countries despite their questionable rights records, a report said. On his first trip abroad as president, Trump announced a $110 billion sale of military equipment to Saudi Arabia, including precision-guided munitions that Obama had cut off over concerns about high rates of civilian casualties in Yemen. Saudi Arabia is at war with Iranian-backed Shiite rebels in Yemen.
Despite approving the sale to Nigeria, the U.S. is keeping up the pressure on Buhari administration to improve its forces’ human rights practices and ensure accountability for violators, a U.S. official said. The aim of the sale is to help Nigeria and its neighbours strengthen their ability to fight Boko Haram and an Islamic State group affiliate in West Africa. Other countries in the region fighting similar threats already have the Super Tucano, the official noted.
ABOUT THE AIRCRAFT
The Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano, also named ALX or A-29, is a turboprop light attack aircraft designed for counter-insurgency, close air support, and aerial reconnaissance missions in low-threat environments, as well as providing pilot training. Its features include Top speed: 593 km/h,Range: 4,820 km, Cruise speed: 520 km/h, Engine type: Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6, Manufacturer: Embraer
The State Department notified Congress late Wednesday of its plans to approve the sale. That triggered a 30-day review period in which lawmakers can try to block the sale. While several Democrats in particular have raised concerns, Congress is unlikely to stop the administration from proceeding.
John Campbell, a Nigeria scholar at the Council on Foreign Relations said concerns had receded somewhat as Nigeria has taken steps to address shortcomings, including granting the International Committee of the Red Cross access to some Nigerian detention facilities.
“There are signs of some progress,” Campbell said. Still, he said Nigeria had a “long way to go.”
If the sale goes forward, the U.S. will have to send employees or contractors to Nigeria to provide logistical support and train teams on how to use the aircraft. They also would provide guidance on international laws for protecting civilians, officials said.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been accused of bombing civilian targets several times in recent years. The State Department said in report last year that the Nigerian government has taken “few steps to investigate or prosecute officials who committed violations, whether in the security forces or elsewhere in the government, and impunity remained widespread at all levels of government”.
Nigeria is Africa’s largest consumer market, with 170 million people, and the continent’s second-largest oil producer. It is strategically located on the edge of the Sahel, the largely lawless semi-desert region bridging north and sub-Saharan Africa where experts warn of Islamic extremists expanding their reach. More than 20,000 have been killed and about 3 million displaced in Boko Haram’s insurgency since 2009, in which the extremist group has sought to enforce strict Islamic rule.

35 people looses their lives in Ogun accident
Chief Executive/Corps Commander, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Cdr. Seni Ogunyemi, says 35 persons have lost their lives in motor accidents in the state in the last two months.
Ogunyemi disclosed this, in Ota, on Monday.
He said that 51 road accidents were recorded in June out of which 13 personas died, 95 got injured and 447 traffic offenders were apprehended.
He said as at July 30, 47 road accidents occurred which resulted in the death of 22 persons, while 88 sustained various degrees of injury.
The corps commander said that 479 were arrested for various offences ranging from violation of traffic rules and driving without license, among others.
He urged road users in the state to be cautious on the highways, especially in August due to the excessive rainfall witnessed during the month.
He also advised motorists to always fasten their seat belt while driving and ensure that they had “C-Caution’’ in their vehicles to alert and prevent articulated vehicles from ramming into them.
Ogunyemi blamed majority of the road accidents to abandoned or broken down vehicles on the highways which, he said, had claimed so many lives.
He advised people to call the following emergency lines: 08062703568, 08164286906 and 08020374582 for necessary assistance during emergencies. (NAN)
